What is Hungry Harvest and What Do They Do?

Hungry Harvest produce delivery helps you eat well and do good by offering weekly or bi-weekly farm-to-doorstep fruits, vegetables, and pantry staples that fight food waste and hunger with every delivery. Customizable boxes come in a variety of sizes and options, including organic, and start at just $15.

The founder of Hungry Harvest is Evan Lutz, who was a student at the University of Maryland when he started Hungry Harvest in 2014. He came up with the idea during an entrepreneurship course and his professor encouraged him to pursue it.

Lutz soon partnered with two other young men: Brian Morgan (a fellow UMD alum) and Zack Silverman (who attended Harvard), and Hungry Harvest was born.

The goal of the company is to repurpose produce that would otherwise go to waste while helping fight food insecurity and chronic hunger in some communities across America. The business has warehouses in Maryland and Pennsylvania, but they run their deliveries from Baltimore on Mondays, Washington DC on Tuesdays, Philadelphia Wednesday-Friday, and Pittsburgh on Fridays.

Hungry Harvest also has a Give program, where they donate ten percent of their profits to anti-hunger organizations that fight hunger in the communities served by Hungry Harvest.

The company is currently worth $12 million dollars and has partnered with over 100 retailers across America such as Giant Food Stores, Safeway Inc., and local co-ops.

The Hungry Harvest founders initially appeared on the ABC show, Shark Tank in 2015 where they received a $300k investment from entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful).

What is Hungry Harvest's Net Worth?

At this time, it appears that Evan Lutz owns 100% of Hungry Harvest as he was the sole founder of the company. When he appeared on Shark Tank, Hungry Harvest was said to be worth $20 million dollars and had a revenue stream between one and two million per year.

It is estimated that since appearing on Shark Tank in 2015, Hungry Harvest has tripled its customer base (which now includes over 100 retailers across America) and is now worth $12 million dollars.

Where are They Now?

In 2017, Hungry Harvest made a deal with Maryland-based grocer Harris Teeter to offer their produce boxes in all 193 of its stores across the US Southeast for free as part of an exclusive pilot program. The company also announced plans to expand into New York City, Boston, and Chicago.

Hungry Harvest is certainly growing and expanding quickly! We will continue to monitor them as they repurpose more produce and combat hunger in America for years to come.

Through its mission, Hungry Harvest helps fight hunger by working closely with local organizations to donate the produce that doesn’t make it into your boxes.

The company’s philosophy is simple: if they don’t deliver perfectly good food, who will? To date, Hungry Harvest has donated over $100k in fresh produce and saved more than 500,000 pounds of produce from the landfill.

What are Hungry Harvest's Predictions for the Future?

A recent article in TechCrunch has highlighted some interesting predictions about food waste and its impact on our environment, society, wallets, and more. Hungry Harvest is at the forefront of this movement to reduce wasted food because it sees how much good can be done when food waste is repurposed.

In a 2015 interview with the Huffington Post, Cofounder and CEO of Hungry Harvest Evan Lutz stated that his company is “working hard to reduce food waste across America. We have been working toward this mission from day one.”

Finding Solutions for Food Waste in America

Fighting food waste

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that, in 2012, America produced about 133 billion pounds of food waste.

On average, we waste 222 pounds of food per person each year – and the numbers don’t look like they’re going to decrease anytime soon.

Reducing America’s annual food waste would save enough money for a family of four to take an exotic vacation every single year! Hungry Harvest is at the forefront of this movement with its innovative produce delivery service.
